Four Tips for Giving During Times of Disaster

When a disaster strikes many people want to jump in and help our neighbors. However, there are a few things to be mindful of to ensure that you are giving to a reputable organization and making an impact. Here are few tips to help you give effectively in the aftermath of a disaster.

Tip #1

Give with your heart, but do your research: During times of crises, you will see many heart-wrenching messages and images on your phone, computers and/or social media feeds, but try not to make a quick, emotional decision. Take the time to investigate the organizations behind these communications to avoid fly-by-night charities that will take advantage of your goodwill. Give to an established charity that is familiar with the needs in the disaster-stricken area and ensure that it is a 501 (c)(3). Visit https://candid.org/ to check the status of the organization that you are thinking about supporting, or visit our Lend a Helping Hand page for a listing of reputable charities that are currently supporting disaster relief efforts.

Tip #2

Avoid Telemarketers and Email Solicitations: Do not click on links from unsolicited emails or open emails with attachments. Avoid fundraisers who claim to represent a charity then pressure you to provide your credit card information. Only give when you feel comfortable and are 100% sure that your gift will go to the charity.

Tip #3

Give online in a safe place: If you plan on giving online, find the charity’s legitimate website. Be sure to look for security symbols in the address bar. For example, the URL should begin with “https.” The “s” stands for secure. The Dayton Foundation also can help you make giving easier through a Charitable Checking Account.

Tip #4

Realize that disaster relief isn’t a relay, it’s a marathon: It can take months and even years sometimes before organizations realize the full scope of a disaster and assess how to best address the needs of that area. Be patient with the organization that you’re giving to, but also follow its progress for updates on impact. Also, think long-term when making your gift. Consider making an unrestricted gift that will allow the organization to continue to work as new needs arise.
