Brookville Community Scholarship Foundation - Dr. Mark and Mrs. Reatha Howett Family Memorial Scholarship Fund
Dr. Mark W. Howett was a veterinarian in Brookville, Ohio, for 60 years. He graduated from The Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1914 and began his practice in Brookville soon thereafter. In addition to his veterinary work, Dr. Howett was a classically trained vocalist and led a vocal club in Brookville for many years. He often served as the soloist at Evangelical United Brethren Church (now the Community United Methodist Church). Reatha Mae (McNelly) Howett was a teacher in the Brookville school system for many years while raising four children on the family farm, Ridgewood Poultry and Dairy Farm. The farm raised Leghorn chickens, Guernsey dairy cattle and Suffolk sheep. Eggs, milk and wool were sold under the Howett name until the late 1930s, after which the family sold vegetables from their abundant gardens along with eggs. Before mechanized farming, large animals were essential to farm operations. Dr. Howett’s expertise in cows and horses was invaluable to local farmers. He served as the veterinarian for the Montgomery County Fair and the Shrine Horse Show until late in his career. From 1929 to 1941, he was the Ohio State veterinarian responsible for testing cattle for tuberculosis and brucellosis. “Doc” and Reatha Howett’s legacy spans four generations of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, many of whom began their education in the Brookville school system. The family hopes that recipients of this scholarship will go on to honor their communities as the Howett family did in Brookville.
