Dave Christie Oak Harbor High School Athletic Scholarship
Dave Christie is a distinguished educator, coach and athlete whose career in basketball spans more than four decades of excellence. A 1961 graduate of Salem College in West Virginia, Dave earned his master’s degree in education from West Virginia University in Morgantown in 1968. As a student-athlete, he was a standout member of the Salem Tigers basketball team from 1958 to 1961 and was later honored with induction into the Salem University Athletic Hall of Fame. Dave devoted 27 years to coaching and teaching in the state of Ohio, building a remarkable coaching record of 299–161 across five different high schools. He began his coaching career at Southern Noble High School, which merged with Caldwell High School after his first year. Dave was appointed head coach of the newly formed Caldwell program, where he led the team for seven successful seasons. His coaching journey continued with leadership roles at Wellington High School, Amherst Steele High School and ultimately, Oak Harbor High School, where he concluded his head coaching career in 1985. Throughout his tenure, Dave’s teams earned an impressive collection of titles and honors, including six league championships, six sectional championships, one district championship, one regional championship and a state runner-up finish. His personal accolades reflect his commitment to excellence. He was a six-time league Coach of the Year, the 1983 District Coach of the Year and the 1983 UPI Ohio Coach of the Year. In recognition of his lasting impact on the sport, Dave was inducted into the District 7 Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004. Dave Christie’s legacy is defined by leadership, sportsmanship and an unwavering dedication to developing young athletes both on and off the court.
Applicants must:
- be a graduating senior from Oak Harbor High School in Oak Harbor, Ohio,
- have earned a varsity letter in a sport for a minimum of two years,
- have a minimum GPA of 3.0 based upon a 4.0 scale,
- be accepted to a two-year, four-year college or university or technical school, and
- have not earned an athletic scholarship or a scholarship that covers full tuition.
Financial need will be considered if all else is equal.
