Fargey Family Memorial Scholarship

Maryellen Fargey established this scholarship in memory of her late husband and their late daughter. Chief Master Sergeant (Ret.) Peter D. Fargey served in the United States Air Force for 30 years. He was an avid long-distance runner. After his retirement he served as a high school track coach and volunteered at the Nightingale/Fisher House on Wright-Patterson AFB. He tried to make a positive difference in the lives of all he encountered. Elizabeth Ann Fargey traveled widely with her military family, was a National Merit Scholar, an avid reader and a treasure trove of information. She had a special affection for the less fortunate. As a result of her volunteer work with refugees resettled to the Dayton area, Maryellen intends for this scholarship to be awarded to high school seniors from refugee families in the hope that they will use their talents to become productive citizens.

Applicants must:

  • be a refugee or from a refugee family, (preference for applicants who are from Sudan or another African country or have participated in cross country or track and field.)
  • be a graduating senior or a current college student from the Miami Valley,
  • have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale,
  • be accepted to a two-year, four-year, trade or technical school or college or university in Ohio only,
  • demonstrate financial need, and
  • be goal-oriented.
