Gladys Turner Finney Social Work Scholarship
The Gladys Turner Finney Social Work Scholarship was established in 1998 to promote and support academic excellence in social work for African-American students. Dr. Finney earned a bachelor of arts in sociology and education from AM&N College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in 1957 and a masters in social work from the Atlanta University School of Social Work in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1959. She came to Dayton, Ohio, in 1959 to be a social worker at the Veterans’ Administration. She later took a job working with children at Children’s Medical Center and Day-Mont Community Mental Health Center. She went on to become a professor at Wright State University and taught social policy and social welfare. When asked why social work is important to her, she said, “I came to believe that people I knew needed an advocate to speak up for them, which is why I chose social work. It focuses on the dignity and worth of all people and advocates on their behalf to help them change their conditions and their lives.”
Applicants must:
- be a current student at Wright State University majoring in social work,
- be African American, and
- have a minimum 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
