Growing up as an only child, Jane Scharrer felt that her pet dogs were an extension of her family.
“I’ve lived with dogs since I was six years old, and I can’t imagine being without them. They’re smart, comforting and provide wonderful companionship for people,” said Jane, who passed away in 2011, in The Dayton Foundation 2003-04 Report to the Community.
To celebrate her parents, who supported her lifelong devotion to animals, Jane established the Albert H. and Helen N. Scharrer Fund in 1997 to direct annual grants to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and SICSA.
Jane’s memory, along with those of her parents, endures today through more than $71,000 in grants awarded to date to support animals in need.
“I’m grateful that, through my fund, I’m able to do something for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton and the Society for the Improvement of Conditions for Stray Animals (SICSA). I hope that my gifts will help these organizations to continue their good work for animals in need for years to come.”
