Since 1921, The Dayton Foundation has been helping donors and organizations help others and our community through endowed funds that preserve our donors’ charitable purposes, today and after their lifetimes.

The Clark J. Haines Musical Scholarship Fund – 1996 remembers this musician, who dedicated his life to enriching the lives of others through music education, by awarding scholarships to help Greater Dayton K-12 students enhance their music education. 

Scott Harman Foundation – 2016 honors the life of Scott "Scotty" Harman, a 2010 Oakwood High School graduate and an Ohio State University student, by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations. Scotty‘s love of music and passion for life and sports endeared him to those around him before his sudden passing in 2012.

Larry Harmon Memorial Scholarship Fund – 2001 was established by the daughters of Larry Harmon, who was the owner of Arena Dodge, Arena Imports and Harmon Cadillac, to award scholarships to graduates of Tri-County North High School.

Robert and Helen Harmony Fund for Needy Children – 1993 gives disadvantaged Miami Valley young people the chance to attend camp. Robert and Helen Harmony earned their living as production workers and wanted children to have opportunities they didn't have growing up.

Nick and Jane Harris Fund – 1986 received income from a charitable lead trust. The former president of United Aircraft Co. and his late wife established this fund to address the changing needs of the Miami Valley community.

Lester L. Haubach Fund for the Dayton Area Chapter of the American Red Cross Emergency Food Bank – 1989 aids ongoing programs of emergency food assistance to individuals and families in Montgomery, Greene and Preble Counties.

Brad and Chris Hausfeld Charitable Fund – 2006 aids the charitable organizations of the donors' choosing.

Kacie and Tom Hausfeld Scholarship Fund – 2010 helps Archbishop Alter High School graduates further their studies at the University of Dayton (UD). The fund was established by friends and family and serves to remember Tom Hausfeld, a retired business owner and active Alter High School volunteer, and his daughter, Kacie, an Alter High School graduate and UD volleyball player, who perished in a plane crash in 2010.

Mary Lange Hayes Endowment Fund – 2009 carries out the charitable wishes of the donor by awarding annual grants to The Dayton Art Institute, Dayton Boys and Girls Club, Hospice of Dayton and Miami Valley Hospital.

Kathern C. Hays and Stanley R. Kuck Scholarship Fund – 2014 aids select Northridge Local Schools graduates in furthering their education. Esther Dennis Middle School staff created the fund in memory of two beloved Northridge educators, Kathern “Kathy” Hays, a music and English teacher for 27 years, and Stanley “Stan” Kuck, who shaped many lives as a longtime principal.

Herschel K. Headley Fund – 1986 provides financial assistance to the Boy Scouts and the YMCA. Herschel Headley was a former executive of the Frigidaire Division of General Motors and the National Alliance of Business.

Heapy Engineering Charitable Endowment Fund – 2013 advances the charitable activities of this local engineering firm. Founded in 1945, Heapy Engineering is nationally recognized as a leading provider of innovative and creative engineering solutions.

Richard and Anna L. Heifner Fund – 2004 honors the memories of the donors by awarding grants in perpetuity to three nonprofit organizations. Richard Heifner, a World War II and Korean War veteran and co-owner/operator of Lima Distributors, and Anna Heifner, a homemaker and accomplished golfer, were married for 65 years.

The Gerald C. and Lucile K. Helker Fund – 2022 awards grants to further the important work of six nonprofit organizations that are important to the donors, including Dayton Art Institute and Hospice of Dayton. The Helkers were married for 61 years and active volunteers in the community. 

Judy Hennessey I Have a Dream Scholarship – 2022 provides tuition assistance for graduating Dayton Early College Academy seniors to further their educational pursuits. The fund established in honor of this Dayton Public Schools alumna and former DECA superintendent who made it her mission to help prepare students coming from high poverty and high needs homes for college and career readiness. 

Henny Penny Employee Foundation Fund – 2017 invests in nonprofit organizations that create stronger families through addressing needs in education, social development and childhood hunger. Henny Penny, a leading supplier of food service and restaurant equipment, is an employee-owned company that believes in putting people first.

James H. Hensley Legacy Fund – 2022 remembers this civil engineer, University of Cincinnati graduate and longtime Wright-Patterson Air Force Base employee by supporting organizations working to improve quality of life in Greater Dayton, as determined by The Dayton Foundation’s Governing Board. 

Dorothy M. Herbst Fund – 1995 disburses income to further the dramatic and theatrical arts in Dayton. Dorothy Herbst was a teacher of English, humanities and drama for 40 years at Fairview High School.

Isabel Herbst Fund – 1995 designates its income to further the art of music, particularly piano, in Dayton and honors Isabel Herbst, who taught piano for many years.

Donald J. and Joan K. Herman Fund – 1986 benefits organizations suggested by the donors.

Michael A. Herman and Thomas J. Pompei Foundation – 2022 was established to fulfill the donors’ charitable wishes across a broad sector of issues important to them. 

Viva Herriman Fund – 1986 honors this former Grafton Avenue resident, who operated an interior decorating shop in downtown Dayton. This is an advised fund.

The Dave Herring Memorial Scholarship Fund – 2005 was established by Northridge High School to remember the school's former principal, coach and teacher. The funds assist graduates in furthering their studies at a college, university or trade school.

James M. Hewitt Fund for the Blind – 1989 devotes income to improving the welfare of blind citizens primarily in Montgomery County and perpetuates the philanthropy of longtime Daytonian James Hewitt.

James M. Hewitt Child Welfare Fund – 1989 provides for the welfare of children in the Dayton area. James M. Hewitt (1886-1963) was the former president of Hewitt Soap Co. He made provisions for the fund in a trust that paid life income to his wife, Gladys D. Hewitt (1899-1989).

Dan L. Hickey Memorial Scholarship Fund – 1998 pays tribute to Dan L. Hickey, a former teacher at Roth and Colonel White High Schools in Dayton. The fund provides financial assistance to Dayton public high school graduates pursuing an education degree at a four-year Ohio public college or university.

The Allen Hill Family Fund – 2005 serves to promote the charitable interests of the donors.

Ron Hill Noble County Scholars Fund – 2021 awards scholarships to help graduating seniors from Noble County, Ohio, further their education. The fund remembers Ron Hill, a successful business owner and family man who found great joy in the small things in life. 

James and Jeanne Hochman Foundation – 2007 carries out the donors' charitable wishes. Jeanne Hochman, who grew up listening to the Metropolitan Opera every Saturday with her father, and her late husband, Jim, a Dayton native who would ride his bike to the Dayton Art Institute as a boy, shared a belief that their legacy is to leave Dayton's future generations with the same cultural opportunities that they grew up enjoying.

Hochwalt Family Fund – 2001 honors the Hochwalt family and pays tribute to Dr. Jerome P. Hochwalt, a family practitioner in Dayton for more than 40 years. The fund designates seven charitable organizations to receive unrestricted income in perpetuity.

Daniel & Dorsie Hodapp Family Scholarship Fund – 1995 assists Centerville High School graduating seniors wishing to attend Sinclair Community College.

Winston H. Hoehner Scholarship Fund – 1992 provides a vehicle to remember this former news director of WHIO radio. Scholarships provide assistance to Bellbrook High School graduating seniors who intend to major in journalism or English at an accredited college or university.

J. Edward and Jennie B. Hoffman Fund – 1985 provides continuing support to philanthropic activities that J. Edward and Jennie Hoffman and their son, Charles, found especially effective in serving human needs and improving the quality of life in the Dayton area.

Charles E. Hoffman Music Fund – 1987 provides income to support professional band concerts for school children in the Dayton area.

Charles E. Hoffman Fund – 1987 was created by this retired naval commander to support a variety of cultural and educational activities to improve the quality of life in the Dayton area. Charles Hoffman is remembered as a teacher of life and a Christian gentleman.

Henry H. Hollencamp Foundation – 1997 designates funding support to Catholic Social Services, Daybreak, Inc., St. Vincent de Paul Society and Womanline of Dayton for unrestricted operating needs.

Cecilia Hollis Memorial Scholarship Fund – 1995 awards scholarships that provide technical education opportunities for Greater Dayton area students, including children of current Venture Manufacturing Co. employees. The late Russell E. Hollis, president and founder of the company, created the fund in memory of his wife.

Jean K. Hollister Merit Scholarship Fund – 1990 is in memory of this physician, who was killed in a Life Flight helicopter accident. This fund was established to provide scholarships, based on merit, to talented students who wish to attend The Miami Valley School, her alma mater.

Holy Angels Capital Campaign Endowment Fund – 2002 will provide annual, unrestricted revenue for the completion of the Holy Angels long-term vision items, as listed in the parish development plan.

Holy Angels Parish Fund – 1995 promotes deferred and planned gifts for Dayton's Church of the Holy Angels and its school. The initial gift came from Marianna H. Struck.

Al H. and Olive I. Homan Fund – 1998 provides scholarships to students of Fenwick High School in Middletown and to improve the quality of life in the Greater Miami Valley area.

Honaker Family Foundation – 2015 upholds the Honaker family’s faith-based values by awarding grants to support local churches, Christian schools and other religious organizations of their choosing.

Randale J. and Candice Honaker Charitable Fund – 2019 ensures the stability and well-being of the Greater Dayton community by providing financial support to Christian charities. 

The Hospice of Dayton Foundation Fund, – 2005 established through a bequest by Betty Jean Edwards, helps to assure permanent financial resources for Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton's programs and services for terminally ill individuals and their families.

Hotelling Family Charitable Fund – 2022 benefits charitable organizations selected by Elaine and Dann Hotelling, who are inspired to help those in need in Greater Dayton.

House of Bread Funds – 2021 support this nonprofit organization that prevents hunger by offering free lunchtime meals and assistance in accessing local resources to individuals in need.

House of Bread Legacy Endowment Fund – 2011 supports this community kitchen by providing annual unrestricted operating revenue. In addition to preventing hunger by offering lunchtime meals to anyone in need, House of Bread collaborates with social services agencies to offer critical assistance and referrals for emergency shelter, housing, clothing, health care and education.

David Kermit Howells Memorial Fund – 2020 was established to meet human needs and improve the quality of life in Greater Dayton. David Howells, a World War II and Korean War veteran, lived to age 99 and had a long and decorated military career. 

City of Huber Heights Art Scholarship – 2022 offers scholarships to graduating seniors from Huber Heights City and Bethel Local schools who plan to pursue a degree in visual arts. 

James P. Hudson Legacy Fund – 2021 helps address emerging local needs and supports innovative, collaborative and dynamic community projects, as directed by The Dayton Foundation’s Governing Board.

The Arthur Huffer, Jr., Foundation – 2005 encourages healthy lifestyles for Germantown residents by providing financial assistance for medical screenings, educational programs, emergency assistance and other activities. This fund was made possible through a bequest by Arthur Huffer, Jr.

Dale M. Huffman Memorial Fund – 2015 celebrates the memory of this beloved Dayton Daily News columnist by providing annual support for Wright State University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. During his 45-year journalism career, Dale touched the lives of many individuals and, in 1993, was named the nation’s 1,001st “Point of Light” by President George H.W. Bush for his recurring series that followed 100 kindergarten students to their high school graduation in 2000.

Jane B. and Horace M. Huffman, Jr., Trees for the Rivers Endowment Fund – 1992 gives its income to the Five Rivers MetroParks to promote tree planting in the county, with special emphasis on the River Corridor. Horace Huffman, Jr., was the retired chair of Huffy Corp.

Murl Huffman Scholarship Fund – 2019 provides scholarships to graduating seniors from West Carrollton High School who exemplify strong creative and risk-taking abilities. The fund was established on the 100th birthday of Murl Huffman, a longtime teacher who devoted his life to educating youth. 

Edward and Barbara Hughes Family Foundation PlusSM – Advised Fund – 2009 furthers the charitable interests of the donors by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations of their choosing.

The Human Race Theatre Company Endowment Fund – 2003 will help Dayton's most innovative theatre company, established in 1986, to continue to produce high-quality and original performances and to educate and nurture local professional actors and theatre students. Human Race exists for those who love theatre and to enrich the cultural life of the Miami Valley through a rich and diverse theatre program.

The Human Race Theatre Term Fund – 2008 supports The Human Race Theatre Company's mission to present universal themes that explore the human condition and startle us into a renewed awareness of ourselves.

Human Services Fund – 2007 aids the agenda of the human services levy by providing financial support for community-wide, non-partisan polling and other activities related to the levy.

John and Virginia Hunter Fund – 2003 was established through a bequest to provide lasting support for three charitable organizations, as designated by the donors.

Kenneth Huntingdon Charitable Trust Fund – 2013 carries out the donor's charitable legacy by awarding grants to nonprofit organizations that support the musical arts and the care of stray animals.

Humane Society Emergency Fund – 2009 provides emergency revenue for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. The fund is intended primarily to support procedures for animals, building emergencies and other needs as identified by the organization.

Humane Society of Greater Dayton Fund – 2005 helps ensure proper treatment of unwanted or mistreated animals by providing unrestricted income for the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

Mary J. and Frances P. Hussey Fund – 2008 carries on the legacy of these Oakwood sisters by providing unrestricted operating funds to help The Dayton Foundation help others. Frances Hussey retired from Miami Valley Hospital after 28 years of service in the diagnostic lab.

William and Joanne Hussey Fund – 2015 memorializes the donors by making unrestricted funds available to The Dayton Foundation to meet pressing community needs and opportunities. Married for 35 years, the Husseys were longtime Oakwood residents.

While the size and purpose of each fund is different, our donors share the same goal – to make a difference.
